KALAMAZOO, MI — Saturday was a very busy night in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). With the exception of the Michigan Tech Huskies, every Division 1 team in the State of Michigan was in action on this night. Here’s a look around the college hockey landscape featuring all Michigan teams:
#9 Western Michigan 5 Michigan 1 — The featured game of the night took us to Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo where the Lawson Lunatics helped energize their Broncos to a 5-1 spanking of the lowly Wolverines. Students were lined up outside the arena for over 3 hours to witness WMU’s 1st weekend sweep of Michigan since 1986. Michigan got on the board towards the end of the 1st with Andrew Copp notching a power play goal. Western would respond with a huge 2nd period in which they scored 3 times. Shane Berschbach started the Bronco scoring 4:08 in. Kenney Morrison and Colton Hargrove followed in pursuit with a pair of 2nd period goals. Josh Pitt scored at the beginning of the 3rd, followed by Hargrove’s 2nd of the night which officially sealed the victory. Michigan will look to right the ship next weekend with a pair of games against rival Michigan State, while Western Michigan heads up US-131 to Big Rapids for a pair against Ferris State.
Penn State 3 Michigan State 2 – The upstart Nittany Lions knocked off future Big Ten foe Michigan State in a game which split the weekend series between the two teams. RJ Boyd and Matt Grassi put Michigan State ahead with a pair of 1st period goals, but that was all the offense Sparty could manage. Taylor Holstrom scored the go-ahead goal for Penn State with 3 minutes to go to send the Lions back to Happy Valley a happy bunch.
Ohio St 6 Lake Superior State 1 –The Buckeyes came to Sault Ste Marie with one goal in mind, and that was a sweep of the red-hot Lakers. After impressive wins over Notre Dame and Western Michigan, Lake State had nothing left in the tank for this one tonight. OSU scored :43 seconds in and never looked back, scoring 5 goals in the opening frame to take 2 of 2 in The Soo.
Notre Dame 5 Ferris State 2 — After a 3-1 win on Irish ice Friday night, the Bulldogs looked to take 2 of 2 from the 3rd place Fighting Irish. However, Notre Dame scored 6 minutes in on a goal by David Gerths, and never trailed in the contest. FSU was able to tie the game after 2, but Mario Lucia and TJ Tynan scored 3rd period goals to send the Bulldogs back to Big Rapids a grumpy bunch. ND avoided the sweep with a 5-3 final.
Northern Michigan 2 @ Alaska 4 – Northern Michigan falls 4-2 tonight in the Alaskan wilderness. The Nanooks sweep the Wildcats on the weekend.
Final Thought: Next weekend’s Michigan – Michigan State series will feature the 2nd to last, and last place teams in the CCHA. Friday’s game takes place at Yost Ice Arena before the teams head to Detroit to play at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday (4:05pm, FSD)
