Detroit Lions rookie running back Mikel Leshoure was carted off the field during practice early Monday, reportedly with a season ending injury. Head Coach Jim Schwartz said that Leshoure tore his Achilles tendon in his left foot and is going to be “out for the year”. According to ESPN, Leshoure was injured after being hit high by defensive end Cliff Avril during practice drills.
Leshoure’s injury puts a huge damper on the Lions plans of complimenting the speed of Jahvid Best with a power style running back in their backfield. Look for the Lions to explore the free agency market to acquire a power back, but as of now there is no word on any particular target they’ll be after. At this stage of the off season the Lions options will be limited, but with guys like Ladell Betts, Jerome Harrison, and Ricky Williams available, the Lions might be able to find someone to fulfill their needs.
