Red Wings Look For Second Straight Win In California

on

Matchup: Detroit Red Wings vs. Anaheim Ducks

Venue: Honda Center; Anaheim, CA

Time: 8:00 PM EST

Television: Detroit-FSD; Anaheim-FS-Prime Ticket

The Detroit Red Wings (20-15-10, 50 points, 4th place Atlantic Division) got a much needed win last night as they continue to fight to stay in playoff position. The injury bug has hit the Red Wings hard this season, so any victory is much appreciated. The injury bug bit again last night as the Red Wings lost starting goaltender Jimmy Howard to injury once again, who are now down to Petr Mrazek being the primary goaltender. The Red Wings will once again be missing Pavel Datsyuk and Darren Helm as well, so they will be facing a tall task against an Anaheim team that is as close to unstoppable at home as there is.

The Anaheim Ducks (34-8-5, 73 points, 1st place Pacific Division) so far have proved that their regular season success last season was no fluke. Holding an 11 point lead in the Pacific Division, the Ducks are in control to make a serious run at the President’s Trophy this season. They currently hold a five point lead in that department, mainly thanks to their play at home this season. The Ducks have yet to lose a game in regulation at home this season, and they only have two losses in overtime/shootout. Their home record currently sits at 18-0-2. If they look to keep the home success going, they will need to do so without Ryan Getzlaf and Jonas Hiller who are both going to be out tonight, Getzlaf due to injury and Anaheim not wanting to play Hiller on back to back nights.

Starting in net for the Red Wings will be Petr Mrazek in place of an injured Jimmy Howard. The start will be Mrazek’s fourth of the season. Mrazek currently sits with a 1-2-0 record with a 1.74 GAA and a .914 save percentage.

The Ducks are expected to counter with Viktor Fasth with Hilelr getting the start last night. There is a chance that Hiller could play, the Ducks wanted to wait and see how he felt today prior to the game. Fasth is a more than capable backup and should still give the Red Wings fits as they try to break Anaheim’s home streak.

Russel if you watched every game last year you’d know Detroit beat the season and playoff series against Anaheim. As for this year, Mrazek actually did pretty well against Anaheim.
