With more questions regarding the depth at the running back position, the Lions have brought a new piece into the fold.

Mike James, who played with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013 and 2014, has run for 332 yards on 79 career carries. He spent the majority of the 2015 on the Tampa Bay practice squad. In a corresponding roster move, the Lions released running back George Winn.

With Ameer Abdullah already on the shelf for the foreseeable future, and a degree of uncertainty regarding rookie Dwayne Washington‘s playing status after a foot injury, there is a bit of a black cloud over the team in the running back department.

If the team deems Washington unable to play on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, another running back would likely be added to the roster before the game. James may just be auditioning for that spot by signing with the Lions’ practice squad. At the end of last weekend’s 17-14 loss to the Chicago Bears, the lone healthy running backs in the game for Detroit were Theo Riddick and Zach Zenner.
