News and Notes: Tigers lose to Marlins, Miguel Cabrera travels with team for first time this spring

In what turned out to be a mostly uneventful day as far as baseball goes, the Detroit Tigers fell to the Miami Marlins while Miguel Cabrera made his first road trip of the season.

Tigers fall to the Marlins

J.D. Martinez launched his third home run of the spring, but it was not enough as the Tigers lost to the Marlins by a score of 4-2. The Tigers outfielder also doubled and drove in two runs on the day.

Alfredo Simon made the start for the Tigers but did not fare well as he gave up three runs, all earned, in four innings of work. The Tigers are counting on the newly acquired Simon to step in as part of the starting rotation.

Bruce Rondon also got in an inning out of the bullpen but struggled as he gave up one run and two hits without striking out a batter. The right-hander did not hit 100 mph on the radar gun like he did in his last outing, but he was still bringing some heat. Rondon of course is coming back from an injury that cost him the entire 2014 season.

Miggy makes his first road trip of the spring

Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera made his first road trip of the spring as he traveled with the team to Jupiter, Florida on Sunday. Though he is with the team, he is not expected to play on Sunday or Monday, but will instead work out and take batting and fielding practice.

Kinsler unlikely to make the trip

Though Brad Ausmus said yesterday that Ian Kinsler would make the trip to Jupiter with the team, that now seems unlikely. Kinsler aggravated his shoulder while lifting weights and the Tigers will use caution and not rush him back. It is unknown if Kinsler will end up joining  the Tigers for tomorrows game.

Donnie Kelly baby!

With the Tigers playing the Marlins, that also meant that they would be playing against fan favorite Don Kelly's new team. Jim Leyland even took the time to chat with his former utility man. Kelly did not start the game, but he did end up coming in and playing first base late in the game. He did not have an at bat against his former team.

On deck

On Monday, the Tigers will remain in Jupiter, FL and are scheduled to play the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals share Roger Dean Stadium with the Marlins so the Tigers will not have to go far.

David Price is scheduled to make the start for the Tigers while John Lackey will toe the rubber for the Cardinals.
