Detroit Lions 2014 Draft Preview: Anthony Barr

So far in this 2014 Detroit Lions NFL Draft preview, I have covered two great secondary players that seem to be the most wanted of the picks mocks have placed us with so far.  For this one, I’m going to take a step out of the box.  Not very far out, but a step never the less since secondary seems to be the biggest want for fans.  We also have a need at outside linebacker this season as well.  So for this preview, I’m going to cover the UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr.  Barr played outside linebacker at UCLA, he played mostly in a rush linebacker role, which is what we’re looking for in our new defensive scheme.  Let’s take a look at his scouting report:

  • Great balance, lateral movement, and speed to the ball carrier
  • Ridiculous athleticism, long arms, and burst
  • Has a knack for drawing holding penalties because of his size and strength
  • Big hitter who wraps up on his tackles

  • Developing awareness, he tends to get fooled on play action and misdirection plays
  • Doesn’t always give his all, tends to give up when blocked
  • Average in coverage
  • Average strength, needs to bulk up
  • Fits better in a 3-4 scheme than our 4-3

Barr has been compared to Demarcus Ware, as he is an excellent all-around player who needs to develop his physicality and leverage at the next level.  Barr is again an excellent prospect who can plug in to our defensive scheme as the “blitzing linebacker” that our new defensive coordinator is looking for.   With improvement to his work ethic, and coaches who will work with him, Barr could very well develop into a crazy-talented linebacker.  I think if the Lions were to go the Barr route instead of a corner or safety, they would still be getting a player with an immense ceiling of talent that is just waiting to be tapped.

Next Prospect: Aaron Donald

Previous Prospect: Ha’Sean Clinton-Dix

  1. He basically specialized in the blitz at UCLA. Watch the film I attached to the article, he's a pretty great rush linebacker.
