Detroit Red Wings Take 4th Straight Win, 3-2 Over Sabres

The Detroit Red Wings put on a scare late, but hold out for the big 2 points, taking the game 3-2 over the Buffalo Sabres.

The first period could not have gone better for Detroit. They’d get on the board early at 5:47, when Danny DeKeyser let a slapshot off the boards behind netminder Matt Hackett. It rebounded forward off of Luke Glendening in front of the net, and bounced to a waiting Darren Helm at the side of the net, and smacked home the loose puck in the open net for the 1-0 lead. They’d do it again at 14:12 on a power play, when DeKeyser let another shot off from the point that was redirected in flight by Tomas Jurco and around Hackett for the 2-0 lead. Just 1:16 later, at 15:28, they’d put another up, when Jakub Kindl let a shot off from the point, which was saved by Hackett. The rebound would come out right to Daniel Alfredsson, who easily batted it around Hackett for the 3-0 lead leaving the first period. Shots were 12-7 in favor of Detroit.

The second period was where things slowly started to shift away from the Wings. Buffalo would finally get a tally up at 12:28, on a power play from a bad penalty by Brendan Smith. Jamie McBain would take a cross-ice pass into the faceoff circle, and let off a quick wrist shot to the short-side of Jimmy Howard, and just inside the post and his arm to make it 3-1 Wings. Shots through two periods were 21-14 in favor of the Red Wings.

It would all come down to the wire in the third period, as Detroit allowed momentum to fully swing in the Sabres’ favor. Buffalo would bring themselves to within one goal at 6:40, just off of a Red Wing defensive zone faceoff loss. Nicolas Deslauriers would scoop up a small pass and fling it past Howard to cut the lead to 3-2 Detroit. The Red Wings would withstand a late push by Buffalo, and a 6-on-5 for the last minute of regulation, to pull off the 3-2 victory, and cement their hold on the first Wild Card spot.

With Columbus and Washington both losing in regulation, this puts Detroit in a very, very good spot. Even if they only win 2 of their remaining 5 games now, they still stand a good chance at holding onto a playoff position. There will be little time for rest, as they’ll ship out to Montreal to face the Canadiens tomorrow night. See you then, Nation!

  1. Your dad is getting me into hockey...I'm a southern girl what the hell??? Lol.

  2. Great game guys!!! Keep up the good work!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ GO WINGS!!!!!!

  3. hockey night in canada tommorow in montreal should be great game keep it up guys go WGS

  4. Awesome streak keep it up boys ! Now if we played like this all year we'd have home ice advantage !

  5. The Red Wings magic number is 93. Once they get 93 points they are in the playoffs. Max points that Toronto and New Jersey can get is 92. Max points that Washington can get is 91, and Carolina will be eliminated when Detroit gets one point.

  6. it took a miracle when boston came into town when they turned the puck over then nyquist scored made it 3 to 2. i hope the same happens against the Habs!

  7. it's not about which team is the best in the playoffs, it's about which team is the hottest Lets go Red Wings

  8. They almost blew it. This team may get in but it's going to be a short playoffs for them.

  9. LOVE our Red Wings!! Love to watch them play no matter what, but this "new team" we are building is very exciting!! Can't wait to see the blend of the new with the veterans as they continue to improve :-)

  10. Go never have to doubt why your fans are with you.when it comes to a gut check time on what you players want{playoffs}.you repaid me as a fan when win you finally won a cup in 1997 after the almost years in the early years of PROBERT AND STEVE Y{CAPTIAN OH MY CAPTIAN}LOVE THE DRIVE WINGS, KEEP IT UP.I WAS THRILLED TO SEE YA AT THE JOE.NOSE BLEED SEATS NEAR ORGAN AND STANDING ROOM ONLY.

  11. Gustav Nyquist is for Real! Many people wondered last year in the Playoffs about the prospects who contributed so much. If memory serves that was Anderson, Lashoff and Nyquist. Suddenly this season the Wings have a definite Grand Rapid contingent and they are good! Last year Damien (who?) Brunner contributed some big goals. He was another Wings find who was plugged into the system and performed. Well enough to have got a nice multi year deal to rich for the Wings taste. Little wonder! Nyquist is the Wings top goal scorer and it's not at the expense of playing defense. It would seem the Wings have found another gem. To which other teams can but ask "how do they do it"? And I haven't mentioned Tatar, Jurco, Glendening or Riley Sheahan! All this points to a dangerous team few want to face in the first round of the playoffs. And if our Zetterberg can somehow make the valiant recovery we have seen our Captain make time and time again? To be continued. GO WINGS!!

  12. Philly is in the other division. We wouldn't be able to overtake 3rd place from them in their division. -NW

  13. The two teams in 7th and 8th place also qualify for the playoffs below the 3 guaranteed spots in each division. The divisional first place team with the most points plays the Wild Card team with the least points, and the other divisional first place team plays the Wild Card team with the most points. Regardless of division. If a Wild Card team moves to the other division, they play out the entire playoffs in that division. -NW
