After being named an assistant coach for the 2016 U.S. National junior team yesterday, Chris Chelios has told the Free Press that starting next season, he will be working with the Detroit Red Wings’ defensemen. Chelios has been doing this for the last few seasons for Jeff Blashill when he was still the coach for the Grand Rapids Griffins, and he is excited to bring his knowledge to the big club. He will NOT be behind the bench as an assistant to Blashill.
“I’ll spend as much time as I can with the players, be on the ice for practices, at meetings, travel as much as I can.”
Chelios could be a huge help to some of the more inexperienced defensemen on the Red Wings’ roster that are still developing. He obviously has a wealth of knowledge about what it takes to succeed in the NHL, as well as how to play defense successfully at that level.
