In the past few years, Houston, Texas has emerged as the frontrunner for new hip hop talent. Performers like Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, and Lil’ Flip have all found a certain amount of success nationwide. However, the biggest artist to come out of the area as of late has been Chamillionaire. His debut album, The Sound of Revenge, was released last November and has already gone platinum, along with the single Ridin’ reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Dubbed the “Mixtape Messiah,” he has used his musical versatility to become one of the hottest solo artists around. Chamillionaire once told MTV that he was “the truth from Texas,” and with his incredible success it seems he was right.
Hey man thanks for agreeing to do this with me. I know you’ve got a full schedule so I really appreciate it.
As a Houston native, I’ve been a Chamillionaire fan for awhile now. But for those who haven’t been paying attention in the past year, why the name Chamillionaire?
The name Chamillionaire means rich in style. It describes the many different rap styles you will hear when you listen to my music. I switch from the fast style to the slow style and then sing the hook all in the same song.
What part of Houston are you from and what kind of hardships did you face?
North side Houston is where I’m from. I was just a kid that wanted the better life and didn’t wanna be poor. I used to work a lot of jobs to make money and was always a hard worker. I just didn’t like to see my mother struggling to maintain and manage. My parents were not really into the hip hop thing and I used to do it anyways but I never thought it would end up being a career for me.
What made you decide to become a rap artist?
I was always into rap and I used to write raps in my school notebooks all the time. When I was younger, it was something I was doing for fun, and when I got older I started making a little noise and started lookin’ at rap as a business that could be successful for me.
How did you get started in the industry?
I started by dropping freestyles on mixtapes. That’s how I started getting early recognition. I did everything you can name of. I was in promotion, marketing, and everything else before I started rapping.
I’m a huge fan of The Sound of Revenge, which is easily the best rap album I’ve heard this year. What’s the meaning behind the title of the album?
Success is what the title means. Success is the best revenge when people doubt you. The title is like a response to all the people that probably thought I wouldn’t be successful in life.
