When Michigan State picked up a verbal commit from 3-star quarterback Theo Day (Dearborn Divine Child) on Sunday, that upped their total for the Class of 2018 to four. It was also the same day that one of their four pledges, 4-star wide receiver Joseph Scates (Dayton, OH), reportedly received an offer from Alabama.

Just two days later, Scates has pulled his commitment from Michigan State and decided to reopen his options.

Scates (6-foot-3, 175 pounds) had only been committed to Michigan State for roughly six weeks, formally announcing his decision back on January 18. He was one of three 4-star pledges for the Spartans for the Class of 2018. Scates is regarded as a top-5 player in the state of Ohio and ranks among the top 25 wide receivers nationally, according to 247Sports.

The Dunbar High School (Dayton, OH) product has made just one official visit to MSU, it was back on November 19 of 2016, the same day the program offered him a scholarship. The junior already has a dozen offers from various Division I programs. Up until this past weekend, he had made visits to just two of the 12 schools offering him a scholarship (Louisville being the other).

This past Saturday, Scates was one of a bevy of high school prospects in attendance for Alabama’s “Junior Day” down in Tuscaloosa. A day later, the Tide officially offered him a scholarship. According to 247Sports’ “Crystal Ball” predictions, Alabama is currently the favorite to land Scates over MSU.

Minus Scates, MSU’s list of 2018 commits drops to three: Pickerington Central (OH) teammates, 4-star athlete Xavier Henderson and 4-star tight end Trenton Gillison, and the aforementioned QB Day from Dearborn Divine Child.
