Wings come back for SO win
After getting completely white-washed by the Blues Saturday night, the Wings badly needed a better effort in their second game of the season. In this shortened schedule, Detroit’s already panicky fan base is on edge. The Columbus Blue Jackets were a welcome sight on the schedule but they gave the Red Wings all they could handle before Damien Brunner sealed the deal in the shootout. Brian Lashoff, playing in his first career NHL game, opened the scoring and … Read entire article »

Central reign
Well, aren’t you all glad hockey is back? The Nick Lidstrom-less era of Detroit hockey got off to a rocky start as the St. Louis Blues whipped the Red Wings 6-0 in both teams’s season openers. St. Louis Blues rookie Vladimir Tarasenko (you’ll be hearing his name again) abused Kyle Quincey for his first NHL goal early in the first period. It was the first time, but certainly not the last, that the St. Louis Blues exposed a … Read entire article »

Predators clip Wings in 5
Red Wings 1 Predators 2 It was a game the Detroit Red Wings had to have. They just didn’t have it. The Wings never seemed to get untracked against a Predators team that boasts the NHL’s best defense tandem and one of the best goaltenders on the planet. Watching this series unfold over the course of the last nine days, it was clear that the Wings were in over their heads. Nashville opened the scoring 6:59 into the series and never looked back. That goal came off the stick of Paul Gaustad. Okay, technically it came off the skate of Brad Stuart, but let’s not be picky here. Gaustad, who was acquired to do exactly what he did in this series: win face-offs. Gaustad was a sparkling 55.2% from the dot, including several key late game … Read entire article »

Wings are missing something
Red Wings 1 Predators 3 There’s something missing from the 2011-12 Detroit Red Wings that past teams had. And I think I’ve figured out what it is. Are you ready? The thing the Red Wings are missing…is “it”. … Read entire article »

Franzen solves Elliott twice in third, Wings win in SO
Red Wings 3 Blues 2 (SO) No one in the NHL had scored on Brian Elliott in almost two weeks. No literally, if he had made it another 6:05 without allowing a goal, it would have been two full weeks since being scored upon. That’s nutty. And then, this guy decided to show up. And then he showed up again. And then Todd did his thing in the shootout, and to the victor went the spoils. … Read entire article »

Outhouse to Penthouse: Jiri Hudler getting the job done
Red Wings 2 Panthers 1 (SO) Put your hand up if you were among the crowd that wanted #26 gone at some point last year. Bench him. Trade him for a bag of pucks. Cut him. We heard it all last year. What surprises me, and really, really confuses me is that I’ve still been hearing it this year. … Read entire article »
