Ty Conklin Signed to backup Howard

Yesterday was another marker on a highway that is nearing it’s end. Chris Osgood retired, joining Kirk Maltby and Darren McCarty in post-hockey Wings affiliated work. Kris Draper is likely going to join that trio shortly, as there doesn’t seem to be any place for him on the roster. Whenever the two Swedes, Nick and Homer, eventually hang ‘em up, it will mark the end of an era of dominance that is into it’s third decade. This group of players have figured significantly into the Red Wings winning four Stanley Cups over the last 15 years, as well as grooming young players to continue the run in their stead. … Read entire article »

Chris Osgood to Retire, Mentor Goalies

Word came down Monday morning that Ken Holland and Chris Osgood had scheduled a media conference call for noon Tuesday. Later on, the Detroit Free Press announced that Osgood would be returning for one more season. Apparently, they jumped the gun a little bit, as now we have a report surfacing including quotes from Osgood’s agent that he is, in fact, going to retire. He has also accepted a job mentoring the organization’s young goalies, it is believed. Click here to read the full article from MLive. The article also claims that Ty Conklin will be signed to backup Howard for the year. With MacDonald’s contract kicking to one-way next year, one would think he’d be the backup for 2012. Obviously, we’ll keep you up to date on the news as it … Read entire article »

Joey Mac is Back!

This morning, the Detroit Red Wings agreed to terms with 31 year old Joey MacDonald on a deal that will keep him in the Red Wings organization for the next two years. The 6′, 197 pound goaltender from Nova Scotia served his second tour of duty with the Red Wings last year. He originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2002, and split time as the Grand Rapids Griffins goaltender with Jimmy Howard and Drew MacIntyre. He posted a career best .917 save percentage and 2.58 GAA this season in 15 appearances for the Wings. Since being claimed off of waivers by the Boston Bruins in February, 2007, MacDonald has also played in the Islanders and Leafs organizations. He has played in 83 NHL games in his career, as well as … Read entire article »

Red Wings Off-season Preview: Goalies

Since being eliminated from the playoffs little more than a week ago, the Detroit Red Wings front office has been hard at work preparing for the off season. With 9 of the 24 players who were regular members of the Red Wings roster this season entering unrestricted free agency, there is plenty of work to be done. Over the next week or so, I will take on each component of the Wings lineup, from goaltending, to defense, to the forwards. Today, we’ll look at who Ken Holland and Co. will turning to as a backup for starter Jimmy Howard. … Read entire article »

So, about that Troy Passingham business…

You can forget all about that. The Wings have decided to put Osgood back on long term injured reserve, so that they could recall Joey MacDonald from Grand Rapids. Sorry to get your hopes up about being involved in an NHL game, Troy. Thanks for everything. Interesting note though, with the Passingham signing, that makes 7 goalies to be either signed or dress for a game for the Wings this year (Howard, Osgood, MacDonald, Pearce, McCollum, Nabokov, Passingham). … Read entire article »

What to do with all these healthy bodies?

Very soon, the Red Wings will have to deal with a problem they’ve barely had to think about for two full seasons. When Brad Stuart, Valtteri Filppula and Mike Modano all return sometime this month (hopefully) the Red Wings will have…*gasp* too many healthy players! … Read entire article »
