Salei’s Impact Will Continue to Be Felt

I have an affinity for the guys who comprise the bottom third of a hockey roster. The guys who make up whatever they might give up in skill to the players above them on the depth chart by working harder than anyone else. Growing up, my favorite player was Brendan Shanahan, but I’ve always had a special connection to guys who put it all on the line every shift. Guys like Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby. Bob Rouse. Aaron … Read entire article »

Red Wings Off-season Preview: Forwards

Quickly, name what’s wrong with the Red Wings forwards! They are too old right? Not physical enough? Too slow? Whether or not you believe that or not, that is the general belief about the Red Wings forwards and style of play in general. My goal is to change those stereotypes by identifying some free agents the Wings should target this summer. … Read entire article »

Red Wings Off-season Preview: Defense

This is the second installment of a three part series where I will look at the three segments of the Wings roster, and what moves they might make in the off-season to shape their lineup. On Saturday, I walked you through the potential candidates to become Jimmy Howard’s understudy. Today, the defense is under the microscope. … Read entire article »

Wings Have Options in First Round

The Wings have plenty of options available to them in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft this summer, where they will draft somewhere between 22nd and 30th. We call that status quo in Detroit, who have become accustomed to drafting late in rounds due to their strong finishes in the league standings. In fact, Jakub Kindl at 19th overall in 2005 was the highest they’ve drafted in decades. … Read entire article »

Salei v. Kindl: The Battle for #6

The pecking order on defense was more or less set in stone at the start of the season. Nicklas Lidstrom was your number one. Brian Rafalski, Brad Stuart and Niklas Kronwall made up two through four, in whatever order you so pleased. Jonathan Ericsson was the de facto fifth defenseman, if you want to call it that. Then Ruslan Salei was the number 6 guy, with Jakub Kindl only ever getting game action when those above him on the depth chart needed time off. But with the start of the playoffs just days away, has there been a shift in the ordering at the bottom of the depth chart? Follow along after the jump and we’ll find out! … Read entire article »

Plenty to Play for in Season’s Final Week

The Wings may have wrapped up a playoff spot with a huge overtime victory against the Predators on Saturday. And yes, they may have clinched the Central division title for the 9th time in 10 years the next day with a 4-2 win over Minnesota. And while they may be locked into either the second or third seed in the Western Conference, they still have plenty to play for in the last week of the 2010-2011 NHL regular season. … Read entire article »

Huge Win for Red Wings Could Set the Tone

The last time the Red Wings took the ice, they were shellacked by a team that will be drafting in the first ten picks of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft to the tune of 10-3. Tonight, they found themselves down 3-0 to a team they had lost four straight to, and hadn’t beaten since October. Nothing was going right for them. They could have packed it in and started thinking ahead to tomorrow’s match-up with the Wild. But boy am I glad they didn’t! … Read entire article »

Crucial 2 Points Won, $14k Raised for Charity

There was something a little sweeter about this one. When Pavel Datsyuk showed off a little bit of his classic dangle dangle, and then went snipe snipe for good measure, and the crowd roared in approval of the Red Wings first victory in March…there was something a little magical about it. Join me after the jump and I’ll explain a little of the magic to you… … Read entire article »

Roster Decisions On the Horizon for Ken Holland – Defense

This season, the Wings were forced into an uncomfortable situation with two of their young prospects. Mattias Ritola and Jakub Kindl were both out of minor league options, meaning that in order to be returned to the AHL, they had to clear waivers. Neither was necessarily kicking the door down to be brought up to the big leagues, but they were given a shot to win a job in training camp in September since it was their last chance to make it. … Read entire article »

Are Wings Fans Spoiled?

This is an article I have thought about writing for a while, but now seems like the best time to do it. With the Wings on a three game losing streak, the critics have started to come out of the woodwork to voice their displeasure with the current direction of the team. So, the question is simple…are Wings fans spoiled? … Read entire article »
