Talking with…Mike Babcock
I caught up with the head coach of the Detroit Red Wings, Mike Babcock, Sept. 27 at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ont. where he was taking in an OHL game between the Windsor Spitfires and the Kitchener Rangers. Babs told me right off the bat he wouldn’t comment on the lockout (not surprising given the fact Devellano just cost the team a quarter mill). Here’s what he had to say on a variety of topics: Rob Benneian: … Read entire article »

What are you looking forward to from the ’11-12 Red Wings? And a bit of self-promotion…
Let me start by saying that I hate the summer. Completely, utterly, entirely loathe the stretch of months from the time hockey season ends until, mercifully, the puck drops on the pre-season some time in September. The last few years have been especially difficult with the “early” exits the Wings have made (oh my god we are spoiled as Wings fans). Seeing as it’s been something like 10 days since I’ve updated this thing, and people … Read entire article »

Wings Announce Babcock’s Assistants: Blashill, Peters
When Brad McCrimmon left to coach Yaroslavl Lokomotiv shortly after the Red Wings second round elimination by the Sharks, it opened the opportunity for some fresh insight behind the bench. When Paul Maclean followed him out the door and was announced as the new head coach of the Ottawa Senators, the Wings were now without any of the assistants who helped guide them to the 2008 Stanley Cup and 2009 Finals. With McCrimmon and Maclean joining Todd McLellan – the head coach of the San Jose Sharks – as Babcock assistant’s who have gone on to become head coaches themselves in the past 3 years, Detroit is turning into a bit of a coaching factory. Today, they filled the two holes created by the departures, with a pair of coaches who have … Read entire article »

Round 1 Wrap-Up…or Should That be Sweep up?
The Red Wings became the first team to punch their ticket to the second round last night when their 6-3 win over the Coyotes completed a round one sweep. The series played out almost perfectly for the Wings, with very little to complain about if you’re a fan of the team. After the break, we’ll take a look at how the Red Wings dispatched the Coyotes and look ahead to who they might be facing in Round 2. … Read entire article »

Salei v. Kindl: The Battle for #6
The pecking order on defense was more or less set in stone at the start of the season. Nicklas Lidstrom was your number one. Brian Rafalski, Brad Stuart and Niklas Kronwall made up two through four, in whatever order you so pleased. Jonathan Ericsson was the de facto fifth defenseman, if you want to call it that. Then Ruslan Salei was the number 6 guy, with Jakub Kindl only ever getting game action when those above him on the depth chart needed time off. But with the start of the playoffs just days away, has there been a shift in the ordering at the bottom of the depth chart? Follow along after the jump and we’ll find out! … Read entire article »

Plenty to Play for in Season’s Final Week
The Wings may have wrapped up a playoff spot with a huge overtime victory against the Predators on Saturday. And yes, they may have clinched the Central division title for the 9th time in 10 years the next day with a 4-2 win over Minnesota. And while they may be locked into either the second or third seed in the Western Conference, they still have plenty to play for in the last week of the 2010-2011 NHL regular season. … Read entire article »

Are Wings Fans Spoiled?
This is an article I have thought about writing for a while, but now seems like the best time to do it. With the Wings on a three game losing streak, the critics have started to come out of the woodwork to voice their displeasure with the current direction of the team. So, the question is simple…are Wings fans spoiled? … Read entire article »

For all you Red Wings fans that were hoping that by this Saturday we’d get to see what a completely healthy Red Wings forward group looks like…not so fast! Sharks Draw First Blood, Hold off Wings Rally
Tonight, the Red Wings saw their season best 5 game winning streak snapped on home ice against a team that has struggled at the Joe in their 20 year history. Tonight’s win gave San Jose something like a 6-30 record in Detroit since their inception in 1991. It was a pair of players riding hot streaks that got the job done for the Sharks late in the game to give them the win. … Read entire article »
