Red Wings Draft Picks: Marek Tvrdon

With their 5th pick of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, the Red Wings took their fifth player from the CHL. Tvrdon plays for the Vancouver Giants of the WHL, giving the Red Wings representatives from all three leagues (Ryan Sproul and Alan Quine of the OHL, Tomas Jurco and Xavier Ouellet of the QMJHL). Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill said at that time that there were several players they liked at 24, and they figured some of them would still be available at 35. Upon reaching that conclusion, they called up Ottawa and consummated the deal. While we have no way of knowing if Tomas Jurco was one of those players, it stands to reason that he … Read entire article »

Player Profile: Tomas Jurco

In preparation for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, which is now less than two weeks away, I will be profiling several players who the Wings could target with their first pick, the 24th overall selection in the first round. I have already covered a handful of players who should be available at this stage of the draft, including Joseph Morrow, Joel Armia and Rickard Rakell. Captain Nicklas Lidstrom is expected to let the team know his plans for next season before the draft, which takes place in Minnesota on June 24th-25th. There is a cautious optimism surrounding the Wings that Lidstrom will return for his 20th season in the D. If he opts to retire, though, everything changes, and the Wings may decide to try to move up the draft board … Read entire article »
