Detroit Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader found himself a little lighter in the wallet this morning following Detroit’s 6-3 victory over the New York Islanders at Barclays Center.

He was fined $5,000, the maximum amount allowed allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement for spearing New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield late in the first period. Both players were battling at the side of the net when Abdelkader jammed his stick into Mayfield’s groin.

Abdelkader was assessed a two-minute minor for slashing on the play, but NHL replay officials reviewed the incident overnight and came out with the harsher punishment.

The money is designated to go to the players’ emergency assistance fund.
