Ever since Detroit Lions fans greeted the new year with the news that head coach Jim Caldwell had been relieved of his duties, speculation has abounded as to who will fill the coaching vacancy.

The Lions have completed a number of in-house interviews, as well as interviewing Houston Texans defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel. They’re also reportedly interested in New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. Of course, until New England’s season is over, the Lions will have to wait. In the meantime, they’ve reached out to a candidate currently employed by a divisional foe in a move that can only be described as unusual.

Per the team’s official Twitter account, they’ve interviewed Green Bay Packers Associate Head Coach/Linebackers coach Winston Moss.

Now, while it would certainly make sense to hire a candidate who has been employed by one of the NFL’s most consistent winners, the fact that he isn’t a even coordinator will raise a few eyebrows.

The Packers have just completed a purge of their defensive coaching staff, firing coordinator Dom Capers, inside linebackers coach Scott McCurley and defensive line coach Mike Trgovac.

A former linebacker at Miami, Moss was selected in 1987 in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During his career, he also suited up for the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks. He amassed 20.5 career sacks as a pass-rushing linebacker.

He started his coaching career as a quality control assistant with the Seahawks and then the New Orleans Saints  before joining the Packers in 2006. He was promoted to assistant head coach/linebackers in 2015.

Stay tuned for more coaching updates.
