The Detroit Red Wings are poised to once again be sellers at this year’s NHL Trade Deadline, and they’re reportedly already in discussions regarding one free agent to-be.
According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers have had ongoing discussions regarding goaltender Petr Mrazek.

With both goaltenders Brian Elliott (expected to miss several more weeks) and Michael Neuvirth injured, the Flyers don’t want to have to continue their playoff push with rookie Alex Lyon. Mrazek is in the final year of a two-year deal he signed with Detroit, and moving him would free up $4 million in cap space for a team already strapped for cash due to some hefty contracts.
According to Helene St. James, the Red Wings reportedly offered Mrazek to the Flyers in exchange for a third round draft selection, but they were rebuffed.
So far this year, Mrazek has gone 8-7-3 with a 2.89 goals-against average and .910 save percentage.
Should Detroit indeed part ways with Mrazek, veteran Jimmy Howard would once again be solidified as the starter in the Red Wings crease, and would likely be backed up by Jared Coreau, currently with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL.
In addition to Mrazek, several other pieces of the Red Wings roster are drawing interest from other NHL clubs looking to bulk up for a playoff run at the deadline. Division rival Tampa Bay is reportedly interested in defenseman Mike Green, though they won’t be able to offer the draft pick and NHL-ready prospect Detroit would want in return.
Additionally, Gus Nyquist is reportedly drawing interest from the Nashville Predators, while gritty forward Luke Glendening is being eyed by former head coach Mike Babcock of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Both Green and Nyquist would have to agree to waive their no-trade clauses in order to facilitate a trade.
This year’s trade deadline is Monday, February 26.
