We continue reflecting on the 2015 campaign for the Detroit Tigers. Today we look at what was likely the Achilles’ Heel for the team all season long – starting pitching.
From 2011-’13, the Tigers had some of the best starting pitching in all of baseball. Deep and loaded on paper, they could handle just about any opposing offense that faced them. Unfortunately, what use to be the strength of the team is now the weak point. Much of the original band members have left and gone elsewhere. Max Scherzer and Doug Fister are in the nation’s capital, while Rick Porcello is in Boston. Scherzer and Porcello are committed long term, while Fister is a free agent after this season.
The rotation has lost its luster, and if the team wants to make an immediate impact again in 2016, it starts with pitching. We have grades for seven pitchers. Who passed and who failed?
