2016-17 Detroit Red Wings’ season schedule released

Yesterday, every team’s home opener was announced for the upcoming 2016-2017 NHL season. Today, the full season schedules for all 30 teams were officially announced. Our very own Detroit Red Wings will open the season on October 13, 2016 when they travel to Tampa, Florida to take on the hated Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena. It will be a great way to kick off the season as both teams have developed quite the rivalry over the past couple seasons.

Farewell Season at The JoeThe Wings will open the farewell season at Joe Louis Arena on October 17, 2016 when they do battle with the Ottawa Senators. It will be the final season for Detroit inside ‘The Joe’ as the team will have a new home the following season when they will start playing inside the brand new Little Caesars Arena.

Here are some other games to note for the upcoming 2016-2017 NHL season for the Red Wings.

  • December 3, 2016 – Will play against the reigning Stanley Cup Champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins in Pittsburgh.
  • December 9, 2016 – Will say hello to a five-game home stand (longest home stand of the season).
  • January 1, 2017 – Playing in the first ever ‘Centennial Classic’ against the Toronto Maple Leafs at BMO Field.
  • January 5, 2017 – Begins a three-game West Coast trip (the only WC trip of the season).
  • April 9, 2017 – Playing the final regular season game at Joe Louis Arena against the New Jersey Devils.

It’s going to be weird not having the Wings playing inside ‘The Joe’ after this coming season. There’s so much history inside that building, and it will definitely take some getting used to once the new scenery for the Wings comes into effect. Hopefully a little more history can be made inside the iconic Joe Louis Arena in downtown Detroit, and have the farewell season in that very building end on a high note.
