Offside call, turnovers cost Red Wings against Ducks

The Detroit Red Wings suffered their first defeat of the season in Tuesday night’s matchup against the Anaheim Ducks at Little Caesars Arena, dropping a 3-1 decision.

Filip Hornet’s first of the season gave Detroit the 1-0 lead late in the 2nd period, but three third period goals by Anaheim would seal the Red Wings’ fate. Rickard Rakell, Nick Ritchie, and Jakob Silfverberg all tallied for the Ducks, who got 31 saves from goaltender John Gibson.

“We beat ourselves 100 percent tonight,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. “That’s not to take anything away from them. They hung in there and kept playing, but we beat ourselves for sure.”

Detroit appeared to have taken a 2-1 lead in the third period of – but an offsides challenge by the Ducks would take the goal away, changing the outcome.

Dylan Larkin’s goal was disallowed after the video review showed forward Anthony Mantha entering the zone right before the puck.

“After the first period we just didn’t play well enough to sustain play like we did in the first, staying on pucks, getting pucks to the net,” said forward Justin Abdelkader. “We took a few penalties and that got us on our heels a little bit. It was not good enough for 60.”
