During the 2021 season, the Detroit Lions‘ defense was absolutely abysmal, and the hope was that it would take a big step forward in 2022. After getting off to an atrocious start to the season, the defense was much better over the final ten weeks or so, as the team finished by winning eight of their final ten games to finish with a 9-8 overall record. That being said, for Detroit to truly contend for a Super Bowl, the defense absolutely must improve immensely, and the secondary will be a major focus during the upcoming off-season.
Why it Matters
The secondary struggled in 2022, and it was quite apparent that they were a big reason why the defense was unable to get off of the field in third-down situations. Because of this, the Lions should not be afraid to do a major facelift in their defensive backfield.

Mark my words. When the Lions take the field for the first time in 2023, their secondary is going to look much different than it did in 2022. Look for Brad Holmes to add a couple of defensive backs via free agency, and at least one during the 2023 NFL Draft.
To make space for those players, the Lions should strongly consider moving on from the following three players.
- CB Amani Oruwariye
- DB Will Harris
- CB Mike Hughes
All three of the defensive backs listed above really struggled in pass coverage in 2022, and it would be wise to let them walk in free agency.
