On Saturday, Detroit Lions rookies reported to Allen Park and in a couple of days, the veterans will join them as it is just about time for the start of training camp.

As it stands, the Lions roster as a whole is pretty healthy but there are a few players who are likely to begin training camp on the Active/PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list.

If a player is placed on the Active/PUP list prior to training camp, they can be taken off at any time. But, while the player is on the PUP list, he may not take part in any training camp practices until he is removed from the list.

One thing to note is that if a player is still not ready to begin practicing or playing when the season begins, they will then be placed on the Reserve/PUP list, where they must remain for a minimum of four games. This rule was recently changed as they had to miss a minimum of six games if they were placed on Reserve/PUP in past seasons.

Realistic expectations for Detroit Lions Jameson Williams

Here are the three players the Lions could place on the PUP list when training camp begins, along with the chances of that happening

WR Jameson Williams

When Jameson Williams was selected by the Detroit Lions with the No. 12 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, it did not take long for him to tell reports that he was still recovering from his torn ACL but that he believed he would be ready for training camp.

Well, Williams may or may not believe he is ready to roll but the Lions are almost certainly going to take it slow with their prized rookie. In fact, head coach Dan Campbell has already said that he doubts Williams will be ready by the start of training camp.

‘I don’t see him being ready by training camp. I don’t,” Campbell said back in early June.

TE James Mitchell

Another rookie who could start training camp on the PUP list is TE James Mitchell out of Virginia Tech. Mitchell, who is also coming off an ACL injury, was selected by the Lions in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Mitchell suffered his ACL injury in the Hokies’ second game of the season so he is way ahead of where Jameson Williams is in terms of fully recovering. In fact, Mitchell was already running, including making cuts and running routes, back in April so he very well could be ready to go when camp opens.

DE Romeo Okwara

The one Detroit Lions veteran who will almost certainly end up on the PUP list to begin training camp is Romeo Okwara. During the Lions 2021 Week 4 matchup against the Chicago Bears, Okwara tore his Achilles, forcing him to miss the remainder of the season.

Back in June, Lions DL coach Todd Wash told reporters that Okwara was in Allen Park for OTAs, but he was still not 100% healthy. At that time, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported that Okwara may not return to action until the middle of the season.
