3 Free agent defenders the Detroit Lions could have their eye on

The second wave of NFL free agency is officially underway and the Detroit Lions could be a team that signs a player or two.

Lions’ GM Bob Quinn has already been extremely active in free agency this offseason, but as we look up and down the roster and then at the available free agents, there are a few players who stand out.

Here are 3 players the Lions could have their eye on for the second wave of free agency.

Ricky Jean Francois (DL)

One of the Lions’ biggest strengths in 2019 should be the defensive line. That being said, bringing back a veteran like Ricky Jean Francois can not only provide depth but also add another leader to the defensive line room.

Morris Claiborne (CB)

I really thought the Lions would use an early round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft to sure up the cornerback position but that did not happen. Instead, Quinn waited until the 5th round to take Amani Oruwariye out of Penn State. Though Oruwariye is considered by many to be one of the steals of the draft, it is not likely that he will be ready to start right off the bat.

Morris Claiborne, though not considered to be one of the best corners in football, is very dependable as he started 30 of 32 games with the Jets over the past two seasons.

Jamie Collins (LB)

The Lions hope that second-round pick Jahlani Tavai can come in and make an impact at the linebacker position but realistically, that will take some time.

Jamie Collins, who made the Pro Bowl under the tutelage of Matt Patricia while with the New England Patriots in 2015, struggled mightily over the past two seasons with Cleveland Browns.

Maybe Quinn and Patricia believe Collins can return to his old form if they bring him in on a short contract.
