On Tuesday night, the Detroit Tigers continued their winning streak by defeating the Milwaukee Brewers. Unfortunately, the biggest takeaway from the game is that the Tigers lost CF JaCoby Jones for the rest of the season as he suffered a broken hand.
The question is, how will the Tigers replace Jones in centerfield?
Here are three options.
Victor Reyes
Moving forward, you can pretty much book on it that Victor Reyes will get the majority of the starts in centerfield. Reyes has been one of the best Tigers’ hitters of late and though he is not going to wow anyone while playing the outfield, he can certainly get the job done.
Harold Castro
Harold Castro is currently out with an injury but when he returns he could also be a nice option in centerfield but he is certainly below Reyes on my list. In 2019, he batted .291 with five home runs and 38 RBIs.
Derek Hill
On Wednesday, the Tigers called up Derek Hill and as you probably know, he may be the best defensive player the Tigers have in their entire system. I really wanted Hill on this team to open the season as his defense is so solid that I thought he was deserving of a spot. The problem with Hill is that he has never been able to get his bat going and that will ultimately determine if he is ever anything more than a late-inning defensive replacement.
VERDICT:
In my opinion, Reyes will be the Tigers starting centerfielder moving forward with Derek Hill getting a start from time.
