3 Reasons why the Detroit Lions should take a hard pass on Colin Kaepernick

On Saturday, Colin Kaepernick will be in Atlanta to participate in a private workout which at least 24 NFL teams will watch closely.

One of those teams is our Detroit Lions.

As we are all well aware, Matthew Stafford is dealing with a broken back and he has already been ruled out for the Lions Week 11 matchup vs. the Dallas Cowboys.

Because of that, there has been speculation that the Lions will be in the market for some quarterback depth.

That may be the case but here are 3 reasons why the Detroit Lions should take a hard pass on Colin Kaepernick.

No Playoffs

The number one reason why the Detroit Lions should not sign Colin Kaepernick is the fact they are nowhere near being in the playoff hunt. In fact, to make the playoffs, the Lions probably have to win their final seven games and that is not going to happen.

If the Lions were in the playoff race, I would absolutely be ok with the Lions signing Kaepernick if they thought he was worthy and the reward outweighed the risk. Unfortunately, that ship has already sailed.

Distraction

Personally, I do not believe Colin Kaepernick will sign with any team this season. That being said, if he does sign with a team, there is no question that it will become a distraction in the locker room. That distraction will not be because he is not welcomed by the players, because he will be, but it will be because of the media frenzy which will follow along.

At this point in time, there is absolutely no reason for the Detroit Lions to create extra distractions in their locker room, especially considering they have nothing to play for at this point.

Too much time away

Kaepernick will participate in his private workout on Saturday after reportedly training five days a week for the past three years.

But, three years of training is much, much different than actually playing in NFL games against the best competition in the world.

I think if Kaepernick shows he still has some gas left in the tank, he could sign with a team in the offseason but to come back after sitting out of football for so long, with less than half the season left, would be very difficult for anyone.

There is just no way Bob Quinn signs Kaepernick after he missed so much time.
