When news broke that All-Pro CB Xavien Howard was requesting to be traded from the Miami Dolphins, I knew there would be some Detroit Lions fans who would beg for GM Brad Holmes to pick up the phone and get a deal done.
Well, I was right so let me help those fans out.
Folks, this is very simple. The Lions should not even consider trading for Howard for these three reasons.
- Howard is already 28 years old. The Detroit Lions will not compete for a Super Bowl in 2021 or 2022 or probably not even in 2023. Bringing in a superstar who will no longer be in his prime when the Lions need him would be ignorant.
- Howard is one of the top CBs in football and he wants to be paid like that. Throwing $18-20 million at him right now? Nope.
- In addition to breaking the bank financially, the Lions would also have to give up a first-round pick and more to pry him from the Dolphins. It would be a fireable offense to give up draft capital to bring in a player who will not be on the roster when it’s time to compete for a Super Bowl.
That’s it. Like I said, simple.
