There is just one game remaining left in the season for Michigan State, as the Spartans will soon know where they will be playing their bowl game. This dormant period usually allows for plenty of news off the field, particularly on the recruiting trail.

Michigan State on Saturday landed a big pledge, arguably their best player for the Class of 2018, in 4-star defensive back Kalon Gervin from Detroit Cass Tech.

Depending on your flavor of scouting reports, the one constant is that Gervin is one of the best overall prep football players in the state of Michigan, if not the best. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound defensive back has scholarship offers from close to 40 FBS programs nationally, going back to April of 2015.

Michigan State first offered Gervin in late February of 2016 when Gervin was just a sophomore. He’s made several visits to MSU since then. Up until this past May, the Cass Tech standout was committed to Notre Dame since early February of this year, just days after the Fight Irish offered him a scholarship.

Many believed after the news of his decommitment from Notre Dame that Michigan State had a high chance of earning his pledge. MSU, however, did have some late competition when Gervin made a trip out to the University of Oregon during Thanksgiving weekend. In fact, when Gervin announced that he would decide his college of choice on Saturday, he teased on Twitter that it’s a two-horse race between the Spartans and Ducks.

In addition to Notre Dame and Oregon, other schools believed to be among the contenders for the services of Gervin included Virginia Tech and Nebraska.

Gervin this season helped lead the Technicians of Cass Tech to a 9-3 record, reaching the Division 1 state semifinals before losing to eventual runner-up West Bloomfield. Gervin logged 38 tackles and broke up 27 passes. He also recorded one interception, one forced fumble and one sack. He took the time after announcing his decision to rave about Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio and their incredible turnaround season.

“He’s a great dude,” Gervin said. “Just sitting down and talking to him, its really cool that he really cares. He asks a lot of questions, not just about football but about family and stuff like that. He’s a real caring coach. He’s really going to take you under his wing, helping me become a man.”

“It was a great turnaround despite having to get people off the team when things happened,” Gervin said. “Coach Dantonio handled it the right way. He handled it the right way and made sure the team got closer and got stronger.”

Gervin also talked about how his decision to decommit from Notre Dame really helped with “rethinking his time and weighing his options.” He soon will be reuniting with former Cass Tech teammate and current Michigan State freshman, offensive lineman Jordan Reid.

Gervin has said that he plans to enroll at MSU in January.

2018 CLASS COUNTER: 19

With the addition of Kalon Gervin, Michigan State now has 19 pledges from the Class of 2018 for next season. Gervin immediately becomes the Spartans’ highest-rated player from this class.

Gervin is just the fifth prep prospect from the state of Michigan for MSU, joining 4-star quarterback Theo Day (Divine Child | committed on 02.27.17); 3-star cornerback Davion Williams (Belleville | committed on 06.17.17); 3-star running back Elijah Collins (U-D Jesuit | committed on 09.29.17); and 3-star offensive tackle Dimitri Douglas (Saline | committed on 06.19.17).
