The Michigan State Spartans could very well have their next great quarterback developing right now with redshirt Brian Lewerke taking the reigns this season as the starter. But who will be replacing him, should he finish his career through graduation, when that times comes?

Perhaps that will come in the form of 2019 recruit, 3-star dual-threat quarterback Dwan Mathis, who announced his commitment to Michigan State on Saturday.

Mathis (6-5, 195) is listed as the No. 6 ranked player in the state of Michigan and the No. 6 dual-threat quarterback in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. The junior is currently leading the Knights of Oak Park High School to a 4-1 record this season, having won the last four games after dropping the season opener to Utica Eisenhower. Mathis & Co. are fresh off a 48-0 whitewashing of Stoney Creek High School (Rochester Hills, MI) this past Friday.

Watching how Michigan State produces quarterbacks in recent years under head coach Mark Dantonio made it a very easy decision for Mathis to pledge to MSU.

“As you go around their facilities,” Mathis said after the offer. “you see that they produce quarterbacks: Brian Hoyer, Connor Cook, Kirk Cousins. If I go there, I know that I will go to the NFL if I produce.”

Not only has Michigan State developed a quarterback factory of sorts in East Lansing, but more recently, they have been keen on finding guys who can get it done with both their arm and legs. Past guys like Kirk Cousins and Connor Cook carved out terrific college careers being primary pocket-passing quarterbacks. The aforementioned Brian Lewerke has shades of that, but he’s already shown an ability to tuck and run on his own.

Another future quarterback commit for Michigan State, 2018 commit and 4-star prospect Theo Day (Divine Child High School | Dearborn, MI), is on record saying that he feels people sometimes “underestimate” his running ability at the quarterback position.

Mathis’ pledge to Michigan State comes roughly three months after decommiting from Iowa State, whom he had pledged to back in February. He also had offers from Central Michigan, Kentucky and Pittsburgh, in addition to the Cyclones.

2019 CLASS COUNTER: 2

With the addition of Mathis, Michigan State now has two commits from the Class of 2019. The other is 4-star offensive tackle Spencer Brown from Walled Lake Western High School, who made his verbal commitment to the Spartans back in late July.

Word has it that Mathis and teammate Justin Rogers, a sophomore offensive guard for Oak Park, have talked about playing together beyond their high school days. Rogers is currently tabbed as the No. 1 player both in the state of Michigan and at the OG position in the nation from the Class of 2020, good for the No. 25 overall player in that sophomore class.
