ROSTER UPDATE: Red Wings make round of cuts as final roster takes shape

The Detroit Red Wings have made moves to solidify what their roster will look like on opening night when they host the Minnesota Wild at Little Caesars Arena on October 5, including several cuts.

Coreau, Parenteau Waived

Goaltender Jared Coreau was waived on Sunday, and will have until noon Monday to clear. Should he go unclaimed, he’ll be assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins, whom he backstopped to the Calder Cup championship last season. Meanwhile, goaltender Tom McCollum cleared waivers and was assigned to the Griffins.

It was an up and down year for Coreau during his brief stint with the Red Wings. He started strong, going 5-0-1 and even being named starter for Detroit’s Centennial Classic outdoor matchup against Toronto on New Year’s Day. But poor starts against Boston and San Jose lead to his being pulled from the games.

Meanwhile, the team released veteran P.A. Parenteau from his professional tryout. In four pre-season games, Parenteau recorded an assist with a minus-1 plus/minus rating and 8 PIM.

David Booth Signed

The team officially signed veteran forward David Booth to a one-year contract.

In five pre-season games, Booth also recorded an assist with a plus 2 plus/minus rating and 2 PIM.

The signing could be to help offset the potential loss of forward Andreas Athanasiou, who still hasn’t been signed to a contract extension.

Rasmussen to Tri-City

Michael Rasmussen, the team’s top overall draft pick from this year’s NHL Draft, was assigned to his junior team, Tri-City (WHL). He performed well for the Red Wings in the pre-season, scoring four goals in five games played.

The team also assigned forwards Axel Holmstrom, Dylan Sadowy and Dominic Turgeon to Grand Rapids, along with defensemen Joe Hicketts, Dan Renouf and Vili Saarijarvi. Matthew Ford, Dominik Shine and Colin Campbell were released from their tryout contracts as well.
