Detroit Tigers’ manager, Ron Gardenhire, sat down with the media at the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings and dropped gem after gem for the masses. Credit to MLive.com for dropping this story first.

Gardenhire spent his 30 minutes talking more about quality of training than quantity. As a defensive specialist, the Tigers’ new manager will spend his time working with the infield and less with the pitchers, and give more control to pitching coach Chris Bosio.

“Bos (Chris Bosio) gave me a call and said ‘I really want to work here. I would love to work with you, and I’m really interested in this job.’ I talked to Al and said, ‘I think Bos wants to be our pitching coach, and that’s good enough for me.’ So that’s kind of how it went down. He gave me a call, and we talked about it, and he was all fired up. I was really excited that a guy of his caliber wanted to come to Detroit with me and do this thing. He’s game-on for this. He’s very excited. Plus his wife’s from Detroit.”

Gardenhire also discussed his plan for leaders like Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez.

“I don’t think I’ll have a problem. You’re talking about great baseball players. So they’re going to come into Spring Training. The way Miguel works and all those things, he’s going to be a leader by example.”

And when it comes to Detroit, Gardenhire discussed his lengthy conversations with former Tigers’ skipper Jim Leyland.

“If he told me once, he told me a thousand times, behind the cage during their batting practice when I’d go out and talk to him, one day he said, ‘If you ever get an opportunity, you would love to manage in this ballpark and manage these fans and this ball club.'”
