The Detroit Tigers are going to look much different in 2018 than they did this past season when they dropped 98 games and finished tied with the San Francisco Giants for the worst record in Major League Baseball.

With players like Justin Verlander, J.D. Martinez, Ian Kinsler, Alex Avila, and Justin Upton being traded away, the 2018 Opening Day lineup is sure to make many fans look twice.

But, according to a tweet from Tony Paul of the Detroit News, it is “possible” that one of those players returns to the Motor City.

“Hearing another Alex Avila-#Tigers reunion is possible, but nothing imminent.” Paul tweeted.

Tigers general manager Al Avila, Alex’s father, has made it clear that his goal is to rebuild the team and that the days of signing superstars is over, at least for the time being.

As things currently stand, James McCann will be the Tigers starting catcher moving forward but the backup spot is not exactly solidified. If the season were to start today, John Hicks would likely be the backup but Alex Avila would probably be the better option.

Avila, who spent his first seven Major League seasons with the Tigers before playing for the Chicago White Sox, returned to Detroit last season and played 77 games in the Old English D. Prior to the MLB trade deadline, he was traded to the Chicago Cubs and spent the remainder of the season in the Windy City.

During his 77 games with the Tigers, Avila was a pleasant surprise as he batted .274 with 11 home runs and 32 RBIs.
