Coming off a pretty dominant game against the Chicago Bears, the Detroit Lions find themselves in a situation to claim a playoff spot once again. They took it to the Bears 20-10, though the score was much closer than the game actually played out. Their effort last Saturday was in no small part helped by cornerback Darius Slay, who became this week’s the NFC’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Slay came into the game against the Bears with a team-high five interceptions on the year, and after two on Saturday bumped that number up to seven. The next closest Lion is safety Glover Quinn with three picks. A solid performance by Slay all the way around ending the day with five tackles, a forced fumble, and 2 interceptions. A well-deserved honor for the Lions best corner.

“Big Play” Slay has been doing this type thing his entire career and was recognized earlier this week as a Pro Bowl selection – the only Lion to be awarded the honor. On the season, Slay has accumulated 47 tackles (4th on the team), seven interceptions, and 20 passes defended. Definitely worthy of a Pro Bowl selection, especially considering he lines up across from the best receivers have to offer. His seven interceptions also lead the entire NFL.

In order for the Lions to continue their push toward the playoffs, they will need Slay to continue his dominance on the defensive side of the ball. In a season where the defense has been all but terrible, it is a bright spot like Slay that gives the Lions some hope looking forward.

So congrats “Big Play” on the honor, definitely well deserved.
