It’s never too early to look ahead to next year, right? That’s what FOX Sport’s Joel Klatt thinks anyways.

Yesterday he revealed his “Way Too Early” Top 10 for 2018, and it certainly came with some surprises. Arguably the biggest surprises came from the state of Michigan, as Klatt had both Michigan and Michigan State in next year’s top 10.

You can see his full list and explanation for each team below, via Twitter:

Perhaps the biggest surprise on this list is Michigan coming in at No. 3. The Wolverines finished this past season just 8-4, and didn’t beat a single team with a winning record. Incoming quarterback Shea Patterson should help things, but he still needs to be ruled eligible to play and he’s just one guy.

That doesn’t even include the daunting schedule, which includes visits to Notre Dame, Michigan State, and Ohio State. The Big Ten east is arguably the toughest division in all of college football so the Wolverines have their hands full if they want to live up to Klatt’s expectations.

Another interesting team on this list is Michigan State at No. 10. The Spartans put together a nice bounce back season this year, going 9-3 and earning a berth in the Holiday Bowl.

But this was a team that was 3-9 just a year ago and also has the tall task of playing in the Big Ten east. The Spartans have a bunch of youth and should improve, but a preseason top-10 ranking might be a bit of a stretch.

So while bowl season is just barely underway and this season hasn’t even been finished, folks are already looking ahead to next year. 2018 might begin in under two weeks, but the football season won’t begin for another eight months.

I guess it’s never too early to look ahead, and Klatt seems to like these couple teams from the state of Michigan. Go Blue and Go Green I guess!
