The perfect birthday present for Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh has always found a way to stay in the news and create storylines since he took over as the head man in Ann Arbor back in 2015. Today marks his 54th birthday.

It’s debatable as to what Harbaugh wants as the “perfect gift.” All of us pretty much have no clue what he wants, whether it’s on or off the field. But I think I have an idea as to what’s the perfect birthday gift for Harbaugh- he already got it.

Enter incoming quarterback transfer Shea Patterson. Yes, that’s a big deal, and here’s why.

Michigan failed to beat a team with a winning record last year, and lost both of their rivalry games at home against Michigan State and Ohio State. They were blown out on the road at Penn State and faltered late at Wisconsin. The biggest problem? Lack of consistent quarterback play.

Expectations are high in Ann Arbor, folks want Harbaugh to win, and win now. The Wolverines failed to meet those expectations yet again last fall. The quarterback position was a big part of that, as quarterbacks John O’Korn and Brandon Peters often failed to hit open receivers and get the job done. That came after Wilton Speight, the original starter, was knocked out for the season in a game at Purdue. But it’s not like Speight was out there lighting it up, by any means. He then went on to transfer after the season.

Patterson should help things, as he was the No. 1 quarterback recruit in 2016 according to 247Sports. If he can come in and provide a much-needed spark for the offense, the Wolverines could accomplish a lot more. They already have a stingy defense, and are solid on special teams.

Meeting those expectations would be a load of pressure off Harbaugh’s shoulders, and I’m certain that would be his greatest wish on the field. That’s what makes Patterson the perfect birthday gift for Harbaugh in the meantime.
