JUST IN: Jim Caldwell responds to ‘skin color’ playing a role in how he is treated

On Tuesday, The Times Herald published an editorial written by Joseph Hayes about Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell that has raised some eyebrows. In the piece, Hayes claimed that Caldwell is treated unfairly by the local media and Lions fans and it has nothing to do with his coaching abilities, but rather because of the color of his skin.

Let’s be real. It’s obvious that many fans don’t like Caldwell, and it doesn’t have anything to do with winning.

For many Lions fans, Caldwell can do nothing right. These are the same fans that called African-Americans thugs for quietly taking a knee during the national anthem. These are the same people who cheered with approval when President Donald Trump called football players “Sons of b——.”

Now, these ‘”fans” have the best coach in modern Lions history in their sights. And no, it’s not just because of the terrible loss to Cincinnati. For many, it’s because he has brown skin.

During his press conference on Wednesday, Caldwell was asked if there was any merit to Hayes’ editorial. Not surprisingly, the Lions head coach simply said, “No.”

When asked to go into detail, Caldwell did not really want to talk about it.

Via Paula Pasche’s Lions Lowdown:

“I’m not saying anything, I’m just answering his question. Why do I have to go into any more detail? It’s end of the story. (Fans) can read it and come to their own conclusion, it doesn’t have anything to do with how I respond.

“He asked me a question and I said, ‘No.’ That’s the way I feel. You’ve never heard me blame anything, at any point in time or have any excuses about anything we’ve ever done and I never will. I’ve been around a long time, my father wouldn’t allow me to do it when I was a kid and there’s no difference today.’’

  1. Stupidest damn thing I ever heard , always want to make things about race . At least coach Caldwell wasn’t having it . Just like Marvin Lewis in Cincinnati he should have been fired long ago but Bengals ownership specifically Mike Brown is cheap . It’s sports coaches get fired all the time and it has nothing to do with the color of their skin . Just like the folks that don’t like Obama , it has to do with his character and actions not the color of his skin . Racist always love to play the race card .

  2. The writer in this case was on the 97.1 ticket show yesterday afternoon, and could not back up any of his claims. This rank amateur so-called writer is a race baiter and has little or no sports knowledge or talent. Was Jim Schwartz black?
