The Michigan State Spartans had themselves a night on Thursday, defeating Washington State 42-17 in the Holiday Bowl. The win was the 10th for the Spartans on the season, and it also got head coach Mark Dantonio to win No. 100 as the head man at Michigan State.

After the game, the good vibes kept on coming when junior running back LJ Scott announced he will return for his senior season during a post-game interview with FOX Sport’s Jenny Taft.

This certainly comes as a bit of a surprise, as Scott didn’t take any time after the game to sit down and think about this decision. Clearly, he believes he can improve on the field and improve his draft stock, while also trying to help the Spartans achieve even bigger things next season.

Scott has been the feature back since beginning his career in 2015. For the Holiday Bowl, he carried the ball 18 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Entering this game, he had run for 788 yards on the season, averaging 4.3 yards per carry, and running for six scores. He has also caught 18 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown on the year.

2015 and 2016 were arguably better seasons for Scott, as he ran for nearly 1,000 yards just a year ago and came up with many big runs in 2015 as a freshman, including the game-winner in the Big Ten championship game against Iowa. This year he had appeared to take a step back, as fumbling issues plagued him early on and he saw his carries limited. Then at the mid-way point, he was arrested for driving on a suspended license. Dantonio allowed him to continue to play however, and his game has really taken off since then, while limiting the fumbling issues.

So while it comes as a bit of a surprise that the decision was announced this soon, I’m sure the folks in East Lansing will be happy to have him back.
