Detroit Red Wings forward Andreas Athanasiou gave the Red Wings their third consecutive victory by scoring the overtime winner against the Ottawa Senators – a mere six seconds into 3 on 3 overtime, tying the NHL record!

Athanasiou immediately took the puck off the faceoff at center ice and sped in alone on Ottawa goaltender Craig Anderson and roofed a backhander glove side to send the fans at Little Caesars Arena home happy. It was Athanasiou’s second goal of the game, and one of many breakaways he had.

He had the chance to give the Red Wings the lead in the third period after being awarded a penalty shot for being taken down on a partial breakaway, but was stopped by Anderson.

“The puck was bouncing a little bit and I kind of saw (Erik) Karlsson’s stick on the left side of me, so I figured I’d go to the backhand again and try to get it up over his pad and fortunately it worked out,” Athanasiou said after the game.

“What was it, like four breakaways? I don’t know,” he continued. “I started asking guys on the bench, what should I do next, if I get another one? I just kind of stuck to it and going to what I know and if you keep shooting eventually one is going to go in.”

Head coach Jeff Blashill’s decision to give Athanasiou more ice time has paid off as he’s been dominant in two of the past three games, all Detroit wins.

“There was some opportunity presented to him with Mantha’s injury and he’s earned that ice,” Blashill said. “He’s played more consistently hard, he’s played the type of hockey he’s got to play to be successful.”

The Red Wings will host the Florida Panthers Friday at Little Caesars Arena.
