As the NFL coaching carousel continues to spin, there are new reports every day. Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin happens to have one of the most interesting seats on that carousel as his situation seemingly changes by the day.

Just yesterday it was reported that Austin was well on his way to becoming the next defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. However, it appears the Bengals are not the only ones vying for his services. Today, NFL insider Ian Rapoport, reported that Jon Gruden is doing all he can to get Austin on his new Oakland Raiders staff.
#Lions DC Teryl Austin's situation just got interesting: As he negotiates a deal with the #Bengals, the #Raiders are making a push to hire him & give him an assistant head coach title to coach DBs. Oakland hoping for an uber staff for Jon Gruden.

Assuming this report is true, the Lions must have granted the Raiders permission to speak with Austin. The Lions also granted the Cincinnati Bengals permission to speak with him, as they look for a new defensive coordinator. Detroit previously denied inter-conference rival, the Green Bay Packers, permission to speak with Austin. The other interview that Austin participated in this off-season was for the Lions head coaching position, however, that seems to be a far-fetched possibility.
Although Gruden’s and Austin’s career have yet to cross paths, Gruden has admired Austin’s defenses from the booth on Monday Night Football. Rapoport mentions that he is looking to put together a super staff, which begs the question who else does he plan to bring in. Gruden and his staff will be expected to produce right away with his uber-talented Oakland roster. He also will be under the pressure of living up to his ten year one-hundred million dollar contract.

Fortunately for Austin, he has options as to where his career will take him next. He’s a wanted man and has a big decision to make.
