After a great start to the season, the Detroit Pistons have cooled off extremely. Leaving the question for the Pistons and their fans, should they be “buyers” or “sellers” with the trade deadline looming? According to many reports, it looks like the Pistons are still looking to add a player and that player could be Charlotte Hornets All-Star Point Guard Kemba Walker.

Despite their recent losing streak, which has dropped the Pistons to 22-22 on the season and falling to the 9th spot in the Eastern Conference, ESPN Insider Kevin Pelton reports that, “few teams would benefit more from adding Walker than the Pistons.” The Hornets have openly said that they are open to trading Walker for the right price, but do the Pistons have the players and cap relief that the Hornets are looking for?

In this hypothetical trade, Pelton states that for the Pistons to acquire Walker they would need to offer a package of Reggie Jackson, Anthony Tolliver, Henry Ellenson, Stanley Johnson and Draft Picks. In return, the Pistons would receive Walker and Marvin Williams from the Hornets.  How realistic is this trade scenario? Pelton says,

The challenge for the Pistons is getting Charlotte to sign off on a deal that offers little cap relief and no exciting young players or picks. Detroit would have to hope Charlotte still believes in Johnson’s potential or offer multiple first-round picks to make this deal attractive.

With other teams bidding for Walker’s services, it seems that Pelton could be spot on with his assessment of the Hornets’ interest. The Pistons are desperately looking to turn things around and have noticeably struggled since the injury to Jackson. This has not stopped the Pistons in trying to right the ship this year and make a playoff run. Other players that the Pistons have been linked to in trade rumors are Orlando Magic’s  Shooting Guard Evan Fournier and Chicago Bull’s Power Forward Nikola Mirotic.
