The Detroit Tigers announced today that they have extended 22 non-roster invitations to Spring Training in Lakeland, Florida. Alex Faedo is the biggest name in the group.

Faedo is looking to make an impact in his first Spring Training, and he should be given every opportunity to make some noise. Faedo was drafted in the 1st round last year and has yet to pitch in a minor league game for the Tigers. He was the MVP of the College World Series last year with the Florida Gators, and many expect him to rise quickly through the farm system.

Catcher Jake Rogers is the other newcomer of interest on the list. Rogers was part of the Justin Verlander trade with the Houston Astros. He’s considered a great defensive catching prospect with some work to do on his hitting. At 22 years old he’s probably 2-3 years away from the major leagues but has a chance to be the Tigers catcher of the future.

According to MLive, 10 of the 22 players were part of the Tigers organization last year.  The other 12 signed minor league free agent contracts this winter, including former All-Star pitcher Travis Wood who just signed with the club yesterday.

Fan favorite Jim Adduci is the other name that jumped out at me. Adduci had a hot start in the outfield last year but cooled off in the second half of the season.  He has a chance to make an impression this year and make the big club.  His story is a classic having spent 10+ years in the minor leagues and 2 years in Korea.
