For years, Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez was a cornerstone piece for the organization, batting in the heart of the order and being considered one of the leaders in the clubhouse. However, V-Mart knows his time is running out as a big league ballplayer.

It is worth pointing out that Martinez is in the last year of his deal that he signed after the 2014 season. Ever since he signed his 4-year 68 million dollar deal, his production has wavered in each season. He has not hit .300 since and only has hit more than 25 home runs once in that time (27 in 2016). He has had problems with his health most notably going on the disabled list twice last season because of an irregular heartbeat. However, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press tweeted out this earlier today.

This is what Victor has to say about how he is approaching spring training this season.

The Tigers have always loved Victor Martinez. It is hard to see the team cut ties with one of their most recognizable players that are left on the roster. However, it is hard to see him take up the designated hitter role especially since this team is in a rebuild and the face of the franchise Miguel Cabrera has had his injury problems. With the team trying to see what they have in young talent and Miggy signed long-term, V-Mart will more than likely be the odd man out. However, as the seasons plays out we’ll see what Victor has to offer in what seems to be his last big league season.
