In case you have not noticed, the quarterbacks in the NFC North are pretty darn good and they just got better with Michigan State alumni Kirk Cousins heading to the Minnesota Vikings. Because of that, the Detroit Lions have to do whatever they can to improve their secondary depth and their defensive depth in general.

Welcome to Detroit, DeShawn Hand

On Wednesday, the Lions did just that by signing former Seattle Seahawks cornerback DeShawn Shead to a 1-year, $3.5 million contract. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, that $3.5 million can actually grow to $6.5 million because of incentives.

Though Shead is not considered one of the top 100 free agents, at least according to ESPN, he will likely compete with Nevin Lawson and Teez Tabor for a starting job in 2018.

After starting 15 games for the Seahawks in 2016, Shead tore his ACL in a playoff game against the Atlanta Falcons. Because of that, he only played in two games in 2017.

Since being signed by the Seahawks as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2012, Shead has two career interceptions and three forced fumbles in a total of 54 games (22 starts).

Detroit Lions re-sign QB, tender young receiver

The moves keep on coming for the Detroit Lions. After releasing tight end Eric Ebron, the Lions have decided to re-sign quarterback Jake Rudock.

The terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed. Rudock a sixth-round (191st overall) draft selection in 2016 out of the University of Michigan, appeared in three games last season for the Lions.

Detroit also decided to tender wide receiver TJ Jones, to the tune of $1.7 million. Jones caught 30 passes on the year for 399 yards and one touchdown, his best year by far for the 3-year pro. He had just 15 catches as a pro entering the 2017 season. So Jones, naturally, was excited about his first touchdown.
