WATCH: Matt McQuaid banks home a circus shot at the buzzer vs. Syracuse

Fewer things, if anything, can spark a team in basketball than going into halftime after making a big shot before the buzzer sounds. We saw it Saturday night (well, early Sunday morning, technically) when Michigan’s Jordan Poole drained a three as time expired, giving the Wolverines the win and a spot in next week’s Sweet 16.

Michigan State’s Matt McQuaid likely watched that and said “hold my beer” (don’t worry, he’s of age to consume adult beverages). The junior for the Spartans pulled off this circus shot just before halftime in MSU’s second-round game against Syracuse on Sunday.

Michigan State held for the last shot of the first half, tied 22-22 with the Orange. McQuaid gets the pass from Miles Bridges and throws it up. Syracuse’s Matthew Moyer blocks the shot, only to see McQuaid go up and heave up a put-back shot just before the buzzer sounds.

I guess the bank is open in Detroit this Sunday.

The triple by McQuaid was more than welcomed for Michigan State fans. The Spartans were just 5/19 from beyond the arc in the first half against Syracuse. In fact, MSU from the entire floor shot just under 29 percent as a team.

While McQuaid’s proved to a big momentum-swinging shot for Michigan State heading into halftime, the three-pointer made by Jordan Poole for Michigan just over 12 hours ago is the bigger shot between the two, when it comes down to importance.

Trailing 63-61 with less than four seconds left in their second-round tilt to 6-seed Houston with a spot in the sweet 16 on the line, the Wolverines set up a play that involved a near-half-court pass down the floor, eventually setting up the aforementioned Poole with a deep triple try on the wing.

The made three-pointer by Poole bounced Houston from the tournament and advanced Michigan through to the Sweet 16 for the second time in as many years.
