Michigan’s Maurice Hurst has found out his playing status for next season.

He has met with cardiologists from the University of Michigan and Harvard, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports, and he has been cleared to get back out on the field and play football.

Hurst has been projected in most mock drafts to go in the mid to late first round of the 2018 NFL draft. His draft stock was in question when he was diagnosed with the heart condition at this years NFL combine in Indianapolis. Because of the diagnosis, he was unable to workout at the combine with the other defensive linemen.

There will obviously be some teams that still look at the heart condition news as a possible issue when it comes to Hurst and his draft stock, and there is no way around that. Since so much emphasis is placed on the combine, especially now, it only makes sense that some teams in the NFL will still see this as a red flag.

With the set to select 20th overall in the draft, they should have a good shot at Hurst, if they decide to go that route. Hurst could come in and be a great piece for the defensive line. The Lions have been active in free agency this year, especially on the defensive side of things, but they have gone the route of signing depth players. Hurst can be viewed as a potential stud for their defensive line, for years to come. Detroit needs someone who can get off the line quick and rush the quarterback and Hurst fits that mold.

Hurst is scheduled to participate in a full workout at Michigan’s pro day on Friday, March 23rd.

There is no denying that since Jim Harbaugh arrived in Ann Arbor back in December of 2014 (wow, it’s been that long already?), the University of Michigan football program has been among the more polarizing and talked about teams in the country, college or pro.

Harbaugh had brought back an excitement and limelight factor that had been missing at Michigan for several years. Those outside the world of football have taken notice, Amazon being one of them.
