Johnny Football in Detroit? Lions show interest in former Heisman winner

The Detroit Lions were one of 12 teams to watch Jonny Manziel throw the ball around at the University of San Diego’s pro day.

The 25-year-old Manziel is attempting to make an NFL comeback. His early years in the league became derailed by a few issues off the field. Now he has said he is willing to play for free, according to his tweet from February.

Even though Manziel said he would play for free, that is impossible. He would have to sign a practice squad deal, with no guaranteed money, which he would be willing to do.

From NFL Networks Mike Garafolo:

“Teams have been informed that Manziel will take zero dollars guaranteed, minimum salary, if need be,” Garafolo said. “He’s still eligible for the practice squad. He would be open to signing a practice squad contract, staying on a team’s practice squad and proving he is in the right mindset throughout this entire NFL season.”

At 25, Manziel is desperate for any chance he can get. Being a former Heisman trophy winner and showing signs of a possible rebirth as a human being, may get some teams interested in the thought of inviting him to camp. People can forget that he did show a lot of promise in college, and he is still young, he still has time on his side. It’s all up to him, to right the ship.

With the Lions being one of these teams at the University of San Diego for their pro day, doesn’t mean they were there for Manziel. The Lions were probably already going to check out their pro day. They did watch Johnny Football throw though, so they showed some type of interest.

Do I think Manziel ends up in Detroit? No. Do I think Manziel ends up anywhere in the NFL this coming season? Probably not. I will keep an eye on XFL team rosters though, for the upcoming 2020 relaunch.
