The Tigers could be picking up pitcher Mike Fiers for this coming weekend’s series against the Chicago White Sox.
Mike Fiers has returned to Detroit and he plans to stay with the big league club. Fiers is scheduled to come off the disabled list before this weekends series in Chicago.
Fiers threw six innings and a total of 83 pitches in Florida recently against Tiger minor leaguers. He said that he was pain-free and had no discomfort at all in his latest outing down in Florida. He hopes to build on that, and continue moving forward up in Detroit.

“Everything went well,” Fiers said. “I threw all my pitches. I threw more strikes than balls, located pitches when I need to and felt a lot better than I was before. It’s definitely good.”
According to the same MLive article, Tigers Manager Ron Gardenhire said he would meet with pitching coach Chris Bosio and GM Al Avila to see “where we go next” when it comes to Mike Fiers and his spot in the rotation.
This is good news for the Tigers. If early indications are worth anything, they are going to need as many arms as possible this season. Detroit signed Fiers to a one-year, six million dollar deal back in December 2017. He is a low risk, possible high reward piece for this current Tiger team.
The current one-year deal the Tigers have Fiers on could be viewed as a smart offseason signing if he has a good season. With there being a good possibility of movement trade-wise at the deadline, if the Tigers struggle like some suggest, Fiers could be a good rental arm for a contender. The current one-year deal could become a win-win situation for the Tigers and Fiers.
Last season with Houston, Fiers was 8-10 with a 5.22ERA in a total of 153.1 innings.
