The Detroit Lions have added some experience at the quarterback position, to battle with Jake Rudock for the back-up quarterback spot. Former USC quarterback and 13-year-veteran Matt Cassel has signed a deal with Detroit. The soon-to-be 36-year-old gunslinger spent the last two years in Tennessee backing up Marcus Mariota.

Cassel began his career behind Tom Brady in New England, making a name for himself in 2008 when Brady went down with an ankle injury and Cassel led the Patriots to an 11-5 season. He signed a deal with Kansas City in 2009 where he had a rocky start before earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2010 when he threw for 27 touchdowns to only seven interceptions.

Obviously no one expects Cassel to really challenge Matthew Stafford for the starter position, but having someone with Pro Bowl and playoff experience on the bench is definitely not a bad thing.

Swanson struggled early on in the trenches for Detroit, which ultimately led to Lions’ general manager Bob Quinn using a draft pick on Michigan lineman Graham Glasgow in 2016. His play somewhat improved over the last two seasons, but he had each of those campaigns cut short due to head injuries. To continue reading this story, click here.
