BREAKING: New No.1 hoops recruit showing interest in Michigan State

As of today, there’s a new No.1 recruit in college basketball’s 2019 class and he’s showing interest in Michigan State basketball. According to Evan Daniels of 247Sports, the five-star shooting guard Anthony Edwards is reclassifying from 2020 to the 2019 recruiting class.

Edwards explained the decision to reclassify to 247Sports:

“Just thinking about it, I decided to reclassify to 2019. I thought it was better for me and my family.”

Edwards then went on to say that he was interested in Michigan State and has decided to take an official visit.

“I don’t have any [official visit] dates yet, but I know for sure I’m going to set up visit for Florida State and Michigan State,” Edwards said. “I haven’t decided about the other three.”

Edwards also talked about MSU’s recruiting pitch:

Tom Izzo is a great coach. Some people I know have went there and a Hall of Famer that I know has gone there and he tells me about Tom Izzo all the time and says he’s a great person and that it’s a good school.”

With the move, Edwards has shaken up the entire outlook of the recruiting cycle — especially for Michigan State. While Michigan State is still aiming to land Vernon Carey Jr., arguably the top incoming big man in the country, it seems that the Spartans could soon be getting a visit from Edwards.

Signing Malik Hill

Michigan State basketball has also announced the first signing of their 2019 class today, swingman Malik Hall. The 6-8, 215-pound forward plays at Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas, the same school Izzo landed Tum Tum Nairn and Marvin Clark from in 2015. He is also ranked the No. 52 recruit in the 2019 class by 247Sports.

Izzo described Hall as an OKG (our kind of guy).

“He’s a guy that has versatility, he can play different positions. We think he is going to be a dynamic part of our future.”

You can hear what coach Izzo had to say about Hall by watching the clip below:

Waiting on Rocket Watts

While Izzo has already welcomed Hall to the Michigan State basketball program, he is still waiting on Mark (Rocket) Watts to sign his letter of intent. The four-star, top-40 prospect was expected to sign during the early signing period which closes on Wednesday. If Watts doesn’t sign his LOI by the Wednesday deadline he would have to wait until the regular college basketball signing period, which runs from April 17-May 15, 2019.

Watts is a speedy guard that puts up big scoring numbers and is the No. 32 recruit according to 247Sports. As a junior for Old Redford Academy in Detroit, he averaged 26.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 2.4 steals per game. Watts is playing his senior year for the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, OH along with his newest teammate, LaMelo Ball.

With the Spartans expecting to have room to sign at least four players from the 2019 class, next year could be a very good season for the Michigan State basketball program.
