With Don Brown a finalist, Temple makes head coach decision

Michigan football fans can rest easy, Temple has found their new head coach in Manny Diaz the defensive coordinator for the University of Miami Hurricanes.

According to Pete Thamel from Yahoo Sports, Temple is finalizing a deal with Manny Diaz.

Diaz was not Temple’s first choice, but their list of candidates narrowed today when Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko declined to take the job and opted to stay on the Aggies’ staff.

Elko removing himself from consideration left Temple with four remaining candidates who have interviewed: Diaz, Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown, Temple interim coach Ed Foley, and Baylor assistant head coach Francis Brown.

Manny Diaz, 44, has been the defensive coordinator at Miami for the past three years. In 2016 he was nominated for the Broyles Award, an award given to the top assistant coach in college football.

Diaz did a terrific job of turning around the Miami defense. Prior to Diaz’s arrival, the Hurricanes ranked No. 69 in the country in total defense, No. 77 in scoring defense, and No. 70 nationally in sacks. In Diaz’s first season, the Hurricanes improved to the No. 12 scoring defense, the No. 20 total defense, and No. 22 in total sacks.

2018 though was the year that the Hurricanes put it all together. Miami finished No. 2 nationally in total defense, No. 3 in yards per play allowed, No. 3 in pass efficiency defense, No. 11 in sacks, and No. 15 in scoring defense.

It seems likely that losing Manny Diaz to Temple will have a big impact on Miami’s defense.

Ohio State trolls Chase Winovich for calling Michigan’s loss to Buckeyes a ‘mirage’

With everything on the line, Michigan went into Columbus and had their butts handed to them by Ohio State to the tune of 62-39. Anyone who watched the game clearly saw that the Buckeyes were the better team, there was no question about that.

Wolverines’ defensive lineman Chase Winovich recently discussed the devasting loss to Ohio State and he had a message for potential recruits and Michigan fans, insisting it was a “mirage.”

From 247 Sports:

“I would say to any recruit or any potential guy that sees maybe what happened in the Ohio State game or is persuaded against coming here because of that, I would say that alone is a mirage and what we’ve built here is a powerhouse. That’s the Michigan I’m leaving. A Michigan that’s headed in this trajectory where the sky is the limit. Not to quote Buzz Lightyear here but it’s infinity and beyond with what we’re working with here. Shea knows that. Shea knows that limitless potential. He could deal with that how he pleases.”
